When I was younger, I was always in awe of Edgar Degas' paintings of ballerinas -- I even own two prints of his work. However, in recent years I have become more aware of how troublesome his views on women were. Degas, who is credited with saying, "I have perhaps too often considered woman as an animal,” would purposefully draw ungraceful women -- possibly in an attempt to humiliate them.

Turning the tide on Degas, I wanted to present the artist as animalistic, highlighting the disturbing impact of the male gaze on art.
